Showcase Presents by Michael Fleisher6/23/2023 My first thought on seeing this book was to wonder who in the name of Belit’s water wings needed twenty Dark Horse volumes of reprinted Marvel Conan comics. This volume collects Conan the Barbarian issues #151- #159 (originally published by Marvel Comics), newly coloured, with all of the original series covers, a foreword comprising the first short part of an interview with Ernie Chan, and with a brand new pinup by Ernie Chan. THE CHRONICLES OF CONAN VOLUME 20: NIGHT OF THE WOLF AND OTHER STORIES Art by John Buscema, Gary Kwapisz, Ernie Chan, Steve Leialoha, Bob Camp & Rudy NebresĬoloured by Peter Dawes, Wil Glass and Donovan Yaciuk Conan created by Robert E Howard One thing I did discover was that the Hyborian equivalent of Occam’s Razor was Conan’s Rock: I think it worked out about as well as that usually does for me. Then I tried to put my thoughts about ‘em into what them there clever folks call words. This week I visited my library and took out and read a recent-ish TPB of some quite old Conan comics, 1982 or thereabouts.

Blackandbritish6/22/2023 It is not a singular history, but one that belongs to us all. Black British history is woven into the cultural and economic histories of the nation. It shows that the great industrial boom of the nineteenth century was built on American slavery and that black Britons fought at Trafalgar and in the trenches of both World Wars. In this vital re-examination of a shared history, historian and broadcaster David Olusoga tells the rich and revealing story of the long relationship between the British Isles and the people of Africa and the Caribbean.ĭrawing on new genealogical research, original records, and expert testimony, Black and British reaches back to Roman Britain, the medieval imagination, Elizabethan 'blackamoors' and the global slave-trading empire. Shine Not Burn by Elle Casey6/22/2023 I’m not surprised that multiple clans claim the Mackinneys, though. So my people were a supporting cast, a special team to the King’s strong men. Their lands extended from the Island of Lewis in the west, though to Ross on the east coast of the mainland. They got to the top by acting as royal agents for a succession of Scottish kings – being in effect the monarchy’s strong men in the north. In fact, since the letter Z (“zed” to the Scots) wasn’t introduced for a long time it’s quite possible that “Mackinney” is an original pronunciation of “Mackenzie.”Īt the height of their influence, the chiefs of the Mackenzie clan led the fourth most powerful clan in Scotland. Once at the Highland Games, some guy tried to tell me that we are instead a sept of Clan Mackinnon. Mackinney was a sept, a loyal family, to the Mackenzies. My family is Mackinney (later McKinney)*, of Mackenzie clan. We do choose how we react to circumstances. The motto reads like it is a choice, which I think it often is. We need to balance the hardships and heat in our lives so that we continue to grow and to shine, but we also need to make sure we don’t let life burn and scar us. I think that is quite a cool motto when applied to life. I need to balance the bad with the good, make sure to avoid the things that could burn or scar me but get close enough to the heat that I feel life and really experience it. To me, though, it means that I have a choice. Brief Summary of Book: Torment (Bloodlines, #2) by Lindsay Anne Kendal Ghost wall sarah moss6/21/2023 “Ghost Wall” ’s teen-age narrator, Silvie, is spending part of a summer on an “experiential archaeology” program in rural Northumberland, where she and her parents are trying to live as much like Britons of the Iron Age as possible-wearing scratchy tunics, foraging for burdock roots, stirring god-awful porridges with wooden paddles. The novel’s feminism, though, felt utterly contemporary. The way Moss conjures up the dark magic and vestigial landscapes of ancient Britain reminded me a little of the horror movie “The Wicker Man,” from 1973, or of the music made in the sixties by groups like Fairport Convention and Pentangle. The British writer Sarah Moss’s new novel, “ Ghost Wall,” which is out this month in the U.S., compresses large and urgent themes-the dangers of nostalgic nationalism, the abuse of women and children, what is lost and gained when humans stop living in thrall to the natural world-into a short, sharp tale of suspense. As the Spanish explorers came to America, they got the smallpox disease with them, killing many natives as the disease spread. This led to many other Europeans wanting to pursue this route to America. Then, it talks about Christopher Columbus and his men sailing west to find Asia and how instead he finds the paradise, America. A large portion of this section centers around how these tribes started, their practices as an advanced society, the tools they created and utilized, their architecture, agriculture and staple crops, and how they came to end. Going back to life in America, it talks about America’s first explorers, Mesoamerica and how native americans lived and key civilizations like the Incas, Aztecs, native American Nomads, Puebloans/ Anasazi, etc. It then shifts focus to the living conditions in Europe, how Europe had limited land, animals, and resources, but still advanced in harnessing wind-based power and agriculture. The documentary starts with a brief introduction of America as an undiscovered world and its natural wealth, diverse wildlife, verdant forests and rich resources. Educated at former American missionary schools in the mountain villages of Bhamdoun and Broummana, he attended AUB as an undergraduate. He would spend the ensuing decades unraveling Lebanon’s fraught historical record, systematically pulling on the different threads that together compose the national mythology of Lebanon. He was raised during a tumultuous time when the country’s historical and confessional narratives were being shaped, manipulated, negotiated, and imparted. Kamal Suleiman Salibi was born in Beirut in 1929, while Lebanon was under French mandate. Not only did he help shape the world view of undergraduates for over four successive decades, one would be hard pressed to find a single graduate student of Lebanon– or, indeed, trained in the historiography of the Middle East– in any academy whose intellectual foundations were not in considerable part laid by reading one of the dozen monographs Salibi published during a long and illustrious career. Salibi spent most of his academic career as a faculty member of the Department of History and Archeology at the American University of Beirut (AUB), from 1953 until 1998, at which point he was appointed Professor Emeritus. Scholars of Lebanon collectively grieved at the news of the passing of Kamal Salibi, eminent historian, professor, and prolific author, on Thursday, 1 September, 2011. |
